Barnbrook Exhibition | Typeface

An experimental typeface exploring rhythm, balance, and visual character through custom letterform construction.

Brief:

The challenge was to design a modular typeface and apply it to an A2 poster promoting a Barbican exhibition celebrating the work of Jonathan Barnbrook. The brief focused on the power of typographic communication in public space — with no photography or illustration allowed.

Using only custom letterforms and one secondary body typeface, I created a visual system rooted in form, rhythm, tension, and hierarchy. The poster balances bold modular shapes with structured composition, aiming to echo Barnbrook’s rebellious, political and architectural approach to design.

The final piece was produced in Illustrator and designed to function as a typographic statement as well as a promotional tool — celebrating type as both message and medium.
