The ‘Compass Alignment’ feature
Improving the accuracy of compass data for a 3D image-capturing app, for a residential property measurement company (Further details under NDA)
Overview
Surveyors were providing inaccurate compass readings — a critical issue for the business. This project aimed to introduce a user-friendly, reliable way to collect accurate compass data directly within the company’s 3D image-capturing app.
Role
I was the sole UX/UI designer on this project, responsible for research, ideation, prototyping, testing, and refining the feature.
Process
I began by speaking to surveyors, operations, and client-facing teams to understand the problem from all angles. Insights from those using the tool daily shaped my early concepts.
From there:
Mapped pain points and business impact
Sketched solution paths
Prototyped key flows
Collected iterative feedback
Tested and refined based on real user input
Solution
An intuitive in-app feature that enables surveyors to capture accurate compass data with less friction and fewer errors.
Features
Seamless compass capture flow embedded in the existing app, designed for quick, confident use in the field
Reduced reliance on analogue tools
Benefits
Significantly improved the accuracy of compass data
Increased user trust and adoption
Time savings in the field
Better data consistency for the business
